Islamic State Claims Responsibility For Deadly Melbourne Attack

The dramatic scene was captured by Twitter user @chrismacheras

Australian media identified the deceased suspect as a 31-year-old Somali male.

It is not yet known how the fire began or whether he was carrying an explosive device, although the bomb squad was sent to secure the area.

"He seemed to be waving something, people around me screamed that he had a knife, but I couldn't see clearly from where I was", a witness told ABC News.

Instagram user nohsoohyun86 uploaded this shocking video of the incident.

Two other men wounded in the attack are still being treated but are expected to make a recovery.

"Incredible work by police in Melbourne but also bystanders - one using a trolley to try subdue the man", Cyndi Lavrencic said.

"It got him but didn't get him down".

One of the officers then shot the man and he collapsed to the ground clutching his chest, the video showed.

Cops say a Somalian immigrant, Mohamed Khalif - who goes by the name of Hassan Shire - crashed his truck on a busy street, hitting a pedestrian and then tried to set the truck on fire. The two other victims remain in hospital.

The text was referring to a call in August by Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to "use bombs, knives or cars to carry out attacks" in countries taking part in the USA -led coalition that put an end to the caliphate he declared in 2014 over parts of Iraq and Syria.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

"He's known to police mainly in respect to relatives that he has which certainly are persons of interest to us, and he's someone that accordingly is know to both Victorian police and the federal intelligence authorities".

Under Australian counter-terrorism laws, the government may suspend or cancel an individual's passport if they are deemed likely to join conflicts in countries including Syria and Iraq. They added they did not believe there was an ongoing threat.

Commissioner Ashton also said there was no known link to James "Dimitrious" Gargasoulas, who is now on trial facing six charges of murder after allegedly mowing down pedestrians in January 2017. In December, a different driver in Melbourne drove into more people, injuring at least 19.

Premier Daniel Andrews condemned the incident as "an evil and awful thing", thanking the police and citizens who responded and adding "as a city, will not be defined by this act of evil - we are bigger and stronger than this".

"We extend our thoughts and prayers to all who are injured and extend our deepest, deepest sympathies". We won't be defined by this evil act.
