Sears, Kmart to close 40 more stores, including last Kmart in Chicago

Sears to close Grand Island location

The additional closures follow an announcement last month that almost 150 other stores will close their doors this year.

In addition, the company, which is trying to stave off liquidation after filing for bankruptcy in mid-October, is expected to finish the closures of 46 money-losing stores this month.

Sears Holdings reportedly is closing 40 more stores early next year as the one-time retail king struggles to stay alive amid Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The announcement continued: "Unfortunately, it has not been possible to successfully conclude those negotiations ". Korea Electric Power Corporation had been earmarked as the preferred bidder to takeover but no deal has reached.

Sears is now working to find a way forward after filing for bankruptcy. Talks stalled because of disagreements over who has first claim on Sears assets, CNBC reported.

The Sears store closing list keeps getting bigger.

The new announcement shows Sears will no longer have a presence in Chicago, its longtime headquarters. According to Business Insider, by February 2019, when the latest Sears store closures will be completed, there will be only about 500 Sears and Kmart stores still in business.
