California wildfire destroys homes, hospital; deaths reported

Tens of thousands flee fast-moving Northern California fire

The monster wildfires still burned out of control on Saturday in northern and southern California, after killing at least nine people, who were found dead in vehicles torched by the flames. California has had four of its top 10 most destructive fires burn in the past two years, the most recent being the Carr Fire that destroyed entire neighbourhoods in Redding, a city of 90,000 in the northern part of the state. By nightfall, it had consumed more than 28 square miles (73 square kilometers) and firefighters had no containment on the blaze, McLean said.

The massive blaze spread north Friday, prompting officials to order the evacuation of Stirling City and Inskip, two communities north of Paradise along the Sierra Nevada foothills. At one point, the Camp Fire was consuming 80 football fields worth of land per minute, fueled by winds of up to 50 mph.

Cal Fire said the Camp Fire is only 5 percent contained.

The Woolsey Fire is seen looking towards the west valley area on November 9, in Porter Ranch, California.

On Friday, Pepperdine University announced it was shutting down its campuses in Malibu and Calabasas due to the Woolsey fire, The Malibu Times reported. There were reports of people abandoning their vehicles trapped in heavy traffic, clutching children and running for safety under blackened skies. At this point, firefighters are trying to save lives and not property, which should tell you all you need to know about how unsafe the situation is.

'Things started exploding, ' said resident Gina Oviedo. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said a "significant number" of homes had been destroyed by the flames but that an accurate count could not yet be made.

"Here we are just a few hours later talking now about another crisis right here in Thousand Oaks", Fox said, making the distinction that the shooting victims and their families had experienced a permanent loss.

"My husband tried his best to get everybody out". I've linked to both of them and provided descriptions below.

The fires, one in the north of the state and another to the south near Los Angeles, are moving fast, driven by strong winds.

Malibu resident Georgienne Bradley, a deep-sea diver and conservationist who's known for swimming with sharks, packed her belongings and prepared to evacuate her beachfront home Friday when confronted with the deadlier threat of an uncontained wildfire. The site also reported that the fire was burning on the property of Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West. Kardashian West later tweeted that the flames had died down, and expressed gratitude to firefighters.
