Boeing 747 Cargo Jet Skids Off Runway At Canada's Halifax Airport

A Sky Lease Cargo plane skidded off a runway at Halifax Stanfield International Airport and stopped near a road early on Nov. 7 2018

The airport activated its emergency operations centre and suspended all flights after the incident where the 747 cargo plane with five people on board went off the runway.

All four people on board survived and are being treated for minor injuries, Halifax Airport says.

Flights are delayed and cancelled at Halifax Stanfield International Airport after a cargo jet went off the runway during a landing Wednesday morning.

The plane wound up on a slight incline far off the runway, about 50 metres from a fence marking the airport perimeter.

Two of the panes engines were sheared off and the other two were heavily damaged.

Pictures on social media showed the hulking aircraft sitting on a grassy area, with a side door opened and its engines attached but resting on the ground.

The main runway was reopened by 8am. The airport's website was reporting delays and cancellations for both arriving and departing flights Wednesday morning.
