Texas basketball: Andrew Jones makes first point since beating cancer

Texas G cheered in first game since leukemia battle

Jones checked into Texas' 2018 season opening win against Eastern Illinois with 11:40 remaining in the second half for his first minutes since being diagnosed with leukemia past year. ESPN said Jones faces another round of treatment for leukemia in December. A standing ovation was inside the Erwin Center in Austin was long overdue.

Jones first checked in with 11 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the second half to a roaring crowd.

What a special moment for a 20-year-old college basketball player who has already been through a lot. "I loved the way the crowd and everyone in the building reacted to him going in the game".

Texas announced last January that Jones had been diagnosed with cancer.

He was averaging more than 13 points per game last January when he complained of fatigue. Jones didn't play another game for Texas during the 2017-18 season. He was released from the hospital in late February and completed outpatient treatment in August. For six months he battled the disease but returned in September only to suffer a fractured toe during practice.

He was not made available to reporters after the game but told reporters last week: "I didn't want to feel like a victim".

Jones finished with one point for the night, plus a rebound and an assist in 9 minutes during a 71-59 Longhorns victory ― but his stat line hardly mattered. Most people don't have the mental strength or even just the drive to want to do it, but anything is possible.
