Protesters Across US Warn Trump Against Derailing Mueller Probe

Barely have the results of the midterm elections sunk in than a new drama begins for Washington.

Lamar Alexander, Republican senator from Tennessee, issued perhaps the stormiest warning, saying the Senate would not confirm an attorney general who sought to stop the Russian Federation probe.

"It seems like every time we get ahead, Trump breaks another rule", Ferdinandt said.

Mr Whitaker has publicly criticised Mr Mueller's conduct several times since the inquiry began in May previous year and taken the side of Mr Trump, who has dismissed it...

He went on to call on Mr Rosenstein to "order Mueller to limit the scope of the investigation" or risk the inquiry starting "to look like a political fishing expedition".

Under government ethics regulation, federal employees are required to recuse themselves from matters where their impartiality could reasonably be questioned.

As the probe continued to cloud his presidency, Trump kept complaining about Sessions recusing himself from supervising Mueller and entrusting the task instead to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

A day after Attorney General Jeff Sessions' forced resignation, independent U.S. Sen. Whitaker is poised to take over the Russian Federation investigation, a probe he has criticized in the past.

On Thursday, two people close to Whitaker said he has no intention of taking himself off the Russian Federation case.

Warner said it would be a "bright" red line crossed if Whitaker fires or hampers Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Two Economic Policies Likely to Change With Democrats in Control of House
And it seems highly unlikely that any Republican will vote for the woman their party has demonized in thousands of campaign ads. That doesn't mean I think race and immigration weren't a major part of Trump's election pitch. "Too bad", he continued.

Professor Scott Lucas of the University of Birmingham described the situation as "unprecedented" but said the Democrats would likely have a plan in place should Trump make a move on Mueller through the acting attorney general or a future appointment.

"I don't know anything about (Whitaker)".

Mueller could seek to challenge his own firing if he felt Whitaker lacked the good cause required by the special counsel regulation, said Ohlin.

The president deflected questions about Sessions' expected departure at a White House news conference Wednesday.

Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller and has overseen his probe from the beginning will stay in his post, according to the official. Mueller is probing Russia's interference in the 2016 election, whether Trump or any of his associates conspired in the meddling, and whether Trump obstructed justice.

Rosenstein no longer will oversee the special counsel investigation.

Whitaker would be required to notify Congress of such a decision.

There have been rumors that Graham was being considered for the attorney general job.

He added: "Under acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker, it is imperative that the important work of the Justice Department continues, and that the Mueller investigation proceeds to its conclusion unimpeded". He has previously said that he saw no basis for firing Mueller.

Short of legislation meant to protect Mueller, which is unlikely to pass, there is little Congress can do to challenge Whitaker's oversight of Mueller, said Rosenzweig. Officials there have said Whitaker will follow the regular procedure in handling any ethics issues that arise.
