'She Has Earned This': Trump Praises Pelosi, Warns Democrats

McConnell says Trump 'very helpful' in GOP holding Senate

Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday in a midterm setback for Donald Trump, but the United States president managed to avoid a feared "blue wave" as his Republican Party expanded its Senate majority after a polarizing, racially charged campaign.

Trump took to Twitter Wednesday morning praising the Senate win.

Democrats' dreams of the Senate majority, always unlikely, were shattered after losses in top Senate battlegrounds: Indiana, Missouri, Tennessee, North Dakota and Texas. He said since Trump has been president, he 's hired two more employees for his six-person company.

Mr Trump was expected to further address the results at a White House news conference later on Wednesday.

Two issues more than any others were on voters' minds.

Of the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation that has shadowed his administration for more than 18 months, Trump said, "I could end it right now" but "I let it go on".

Rep. Elijah Cummings, the Maryland Democrat who is poised to take charge of the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement to The Associated Press that he intends to use the panel as "a check on the executive branch - not merely for potential criminal violations, but for much broader concerns, such as conflicts of interest, emoluments violations and waste, fraud and abuse".

The political and practical stakes were sky-high.

Mr Trump called House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, a conversation that her office said included congratulations and a nod to her pitch for bipartisanship.

Trump also has sent soldiers to the Mexican border and threatened to have illegal immigrants shot if they throw stones.

During the campaign, Pelosi urged candidates to focus on lowering health care costs and creating jobs with infrastructure investment, and she tamped down calls for impeachment. That message, Ingraham said, is going to be a "tough sell" in 2020.

For example, Cummings and other Democratic lawmakers a year ago filed a federal lawsuit demanding disclosures of records to determine how Trump was approved by the General Services Administration to maintain the lease of the Trump International Hotel in Washington after he became president.

But Republicans appeared bound to hold onto the Senate, and possibly even pick up a couple of seats.

Almost 40 per cent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, the national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

Trump encouraged voters to view the 2018 midterms as a referendum on his leadership, pointing proudly to the surging economy at recent rallies. Stein was talking on Fox Business Network's live election coverage. So this was a five-point decline from what was already a low 2016 number.

He noted that former President Obama lost a net 63 House seats in the 2010 midterm election and former President Bill Clinton lost 54 in the 1994 midterm election, but Trump only lost less than 30 seats. That didn't matter. All of them won re-election.

Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey beat Republican challenger Bob Hugin to win a third term.

Democrats' performance in the House battlefield was mixed.

The House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees taxes and trade, saw four of its Republican members lose their seats.

In south Florida, former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala defeated Republican Maria Elvira Salazar.

In Florida, six House seats are in play, and there are close and crucial battles for a Senate seat and the governorship. To get even with Trump, Mr. McCain had cast the vote that killed the Obamacare replacement that House Republicans finally, after years of dithering, had passed. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

As for the Senate race, despite Trump's deeply polarizing effect on voters, the GOP harnessed his rock-solid popularity with hard-right voters in rural, deep-red states.

At his watch party, Trump was upbeat. Democrats relied more upon women, people of colour, young people and college graduates.

Overall, women voted considerably more in favour of congressional Democratic candidates - with fewer than 4 in 10 voting for Republicans, according to VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 115,000 voters and about 20,000 non-voters - conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago.

In suburban areas where key House races were decided, female voters skewed significantly toward Democrats by a almost 10-point margin.

Mr Trump's main reason for saying he wouldn't allow the tax returns to be released is because "people don't understand tax returns".
