Ruth Bader Ginsburg hospitalized after fracturing 3 ribs in fall

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Sundance

On Wednesday night, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fell, cracking three ribs and getting rushed to the hospital, the Associated Press reported. Tests showed she fractured three ribs on her left side and she was admitted for observation and treatment, according to a statement from the court.

Ginsburg has persevered on the bench despite several health issues, including scares from both colon and pancreatic cancer and a heart procedure in which she received a stent in her right coronary artery. She also was hospitalized after a bad reaction to medicine in 2009.

The 85-year-old justice, a heroine for liberals, has vowed not to retire while President Donald Trump is in office. President Trump and new acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker were expected to attend. She was the second woman to ever be confirmed to the Supreme Court, after retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The severity depends in part on whether the ribs are cracked or broken all the way through, and how many are broken. But they can be very painful and controlling pain is key.
