Pipe Bombs Suspect Held Without Bail in New York

Sayoc, 56, appeared before a Manhattan federal court for just a few minutes. Prosecutors are still determining whether Sayoc had the necessary skills to successfully build a bomb that could detonate on its own, or if he meant to send the bombs out to forge a divide and heighten political tension.

Prosecutors wrote that the defendant "used mailing materials almost identical to the other 15 packages, including the same type of envelope, address format, and stamps".

Prosecutors have accused Sayoc of sending 16 improvised explosive devices.

"My son has been ill for a long time and my family and I have tried, over and over again, without success to urge him to get the help he needs", she wrote.

Cesar Sayoc, the Florida man accused of sending pipe bombs to critics of US President Donald Trump, appeared in a NY court.

He was arrested on October 26, and faces a maximum 48 years in prison if convicted on the five counts he now faces, including for mailing explosives and threatening the Clintons.

He is accused of mailing at least 15 pipe bombs to several high-profile Democrats, including former President Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton.

Mangled wreckage of BHP runaway train revealed in video footage
It was reported that the train was travelling at an average speed of more than 100 km/h on its solo journey. BHP has suspended its train operations. "Recovery operations are under way".

None of the devices exploded, and no one was injured in the pipe bomb scare.

"The government submits that the defendant poses a serious danger to the public and a risk of flight and should be detained pending trial", said Assistant US Attorney Jane Kim.

He was living in a van covered plastered with stickers of Mr Trump and images of some of the United States president's opponents with red crosshairs over their faces.

Federal investigators say they searched a laptop computer in the van and found lists of addresses that allegedly match the labels on the bombs when they were packaged and mailed from southern Florida.

The explosive devices were sent through the mail and Sayoc was tracked down based on fingerprint and possible DNA evidence, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Prosecutors say the laptop also contained addresses for "numerous additional targets.' Those people, whose names have not been made public, have been notified about the threat by the Federal Bureau of Investigation".
