Democrats flip 2 GOP seat in early returns for House battle

Former Gov. Phil Bredesen is interviewed past the 100-foot polling place boundary after voting Tuesday in Nashville Tenn. Bredesen is running against Rep. Marsha Blackburn R-Tenn. for the U.S. Senate

His take-no-prisoners approach troubled many Republicans seeking to appeal to moderate voters in suburban House districts, but Trump prioritized base voters in the deep-red states that could determine the fate of the Senate.

"Donald Trump went out and worked his tail off", Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., who heads the Senate GOP's campaign committee, said in an interview.

He seized on scenes of a caravan of Central American migrants heading through Mexico for the USA, mused on ending the constitutional guarantee of citizenship to all people born in the United States and ran a television advertisement, deemed too provocative to air by mainstream networks, that linked Democrats to a criminal who was an undocumented immigrant.

It could have been a much bigger night for Democrats, who suffered stinging losses in OH and in Florida, where Trump-backed Republican Ron DeSantis ended Democrat Andrew Gillum's bid to become the state's first African-American governor.

Obama said Republicans were taking credit for the economic renewal that started under his presidency.

Republicans rolled into the election with a 77-57 House majority.

The Democrats' narrow path to the Senate was slammed shut after setbacks in Indiana, Tennessee, North Dakota and Texas.

Their party had put high hopes in flipping the traditionally Republican Texas, but candidate Beto O'Rourke came up short against incumbent Senator Ted Cruz. It was widely expected that if the Republicans padded its current two-seat majority, it would do so only modestly.

The White House for days has stressed the historical headwinds it faced: In the last three decades, 2002 was the only midterm election when the party holding the White House gained Senate seats. Democrats are relying more upon women, people of color, young people and college graduates.

Though Republicans entered the night commanding the Senate only narrowly, a crucial piece of math worked for them: Democrats and their two independent allies defended 26 seats, Republicans just nine. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., chairman of Senate Democrats' political arm.

In the battle for the Senate, Democrats are defending seats in 10 states that Trump won in the 2016 presidential election, including a handful that he won by double digits. Bredesen had promised a bipartisan approach if elected.

In the suburbs outside the nation's capital, Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock - among the most endangered GOP incumbents, branded Barbara "Trumpstock" by Democrats - lost to Jennifer Wexton, a prosecutor and state legislator.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin was re-elected in West Virginia, which Trump captured by 42 percentage points.

Democrats could also recapture governor's offices in several battleground states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and OH, a potential help for the party in those states in the 2020 presidential race.

Fox News Channel projected on Tuesday that Democrats will win control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Fueling their intensity were Trump's anti-immigration stances, his efforts to dismantle health care protections enacted under Obama and the #MeToo movement's fury over sexual harassment.

But most Democratic legislative candidates focused on "bread-and-butter issues", Hortman said in a recent interview. "And so this really was my opportunity to help this country in changing who is making the decisions".

AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate conducted by The Associated Press, highlighted Trump's impact.

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to VoteCast, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

"I believe he values immigration, but he wants to make sure we're safe", said Tina Newby of Wetland, Michigan, a GOP voter.

"Things are pretty good, yet we have all this division and we have this president who's relatively unpopular, so we have this odd juxtaposition", said Kent State politics professor Michael Ensley, citing Trump's poor approval ratings despite a rollicking USA economy and the absence of any major foreign-policy challenges. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Sen. All three and Sherrod Brown, a pro-labor senator victorious in OH, are considered potential 2020 Democratic presidential contenders.

Defeated Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was poised to win a Senate seat from Utah.
