Two more Lakewood measles cases confirmed

"If you're planning an worldwide trip, the World Health Organization recommends that adults or adolescents unsure of their immune status get a dose of measles vaccine before traveling", Dr.

Ocean County Health Officials have just confirmed with News 12 New Jersey there are now four cases of measles in the Lakewood Township area.

Measles is a highly contagious disease.

A document with information on what to do if you've been exposed to measles is available here. Measles can cause serious complications, such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain).

Anyone who suspects they were exposed to the disease should call a health care provider before going to a medical office or emergency department so special arrangements can be made for an evaluation. Measles is easily spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes.

If even a single student who tests positive for measles has been in the school, any unimmunized child must stay out of school for 21 days according to Department of Health regulations, the November 1 letter said. This will help to prevent others at these facilities from being exposed to the illness. "Anyone in the building when the student was there and for two hours after is considered exposed". However, students who were not immunized and have only now gotten the shot must still wait 21 days "until the shot is considered effective", and must stay out of school. "Measles is highly contagious, so anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of getting the disease, and they may spread measles to people who can not get vaccinated because they are too young or have specific health conditions", said Dr. Ruppert.

However, because there is a measles outbreak in Rockland County, the Rockland County Department of Health is currently recommending that children 6 months through 11 months of age get an MMR vaccine now.

"All three cases are children who are unvaccinated, not of school age and do not attend daycare", DHEC said in a statement. Children can receive the second dose earlier, at least 28 days after the first dose.

"If you're planning an global trip, the World Health Organization recommends that adults or adolescents unsure of their immune status get a dose of measles vaccine before traveling", Dr.

The new cases come after exposure to a man who had traveled to Israel and was confirmed to have the measles late last week. Before worldwide travel: Infants 6 through 11 months of age should receive one dose of MMR vaccine. Infants who get one dose of MMR vaccine before their first birthday should get two more doses (one dose at 12 through 15 months of age and another dose separated by at least 28 days).

Also, children 1 through 3 years of age who have already received their first MMR vaccine should get a second MMR vaccine now, as long as 28 days have passed since the first MMR vaccine was given to them.

Teenagers and adults who do not have evidence of immunity against measles should get two doses of MMR vaccine separated by at least 28 days.
