Cellphone radiation may cause cancer in rats

Cellphone Radiation Causes Cancer in Rats, Government Study Finds

The link between exposure and cancer was less clear in female rats and in male and female mice, according to the November 1 report from the National Toxicology Program (NTP) at the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

The FDA disagreed. "The current safety limits for cell phone radiofrequency energy exposure remain acceptable for protecting the public health", said Shuren, the Food and Drug Administration official.

Thursday, the agency upgraded its description of those findings. There was also some evidence of tumors in the brain and adrenal gland of exposed male rats.

"When new studies or information becomes available, the FDA conducts thorough evaluations of the data to continually inform our thinking", said Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

The studies could be an important step to understanding RFR's impact on humans.

The National Toxicology Program Study, The Ramazzini Institute Study, The Chou Air Force Study and The Repacholi Mice Study all proved it. As scientists often say, more study is needed. "In our studies, rats and mice received radio frequency radiation across their whole bodies", John Bucher, researcher from the NTP, said in a statement.

The findings do not apply to people, they said.

We studied the effects of almost lifetime exposures to two different types, or modulations, of RFR (GSM and CDMA) used in cellular telephone networks in the United States in male and female rats and mice to identify potential toxicity or cancer-related hazards.

He pointed out one well-known risk from cellphones: vehicle crashes when drivers are distracted by them. For the rats, the exposures started before birth and continued until they were about 2 years old.

The team is still undecided if they will visit the White House if an invitation is extended. So whenever we have to make the decision we'll make it.

In a seeming contradiction, male rats exposed to cellphone signals lived longer than rats not exposed.

The report leaves open the possibility that the kind of radiation produced by cellphones might have the potential to cause cancer, but it does not answer the question of how that might happen. Many epidemiologists see no overall rise in the incidence of gliomas in the human population.

"Animal studies like this one contribute to our discussions on this topic, but we must remember the study was not created to test the safety of cell phone use in humans, so we can not draw conclusions about the risks of cell phone use from it".

The $30 million, decades-long study has involved 3,000 rats and mice, some of which were irradiated while pregnant and the pups then also exposed to the cellphone radiation.

The NTP researchers are planning future studies on the effects of newer technologies, and these studies will use different methods so that they will be completed in weeks to months, rather than years.

"The study was not created to test the safety of cell phone use in humans, so we can not draw conclusions about the risks of cell phone use from it", Shuren said.

But the FDA has already taken issue with the findings. Bucher declined repeatedly to assess the hazard. Members of Congress have been blinded by industry, who have also captured the FCC and many members of the media, using advertising spending.

At the exposure's lowest levels, it was equal to the maximum local tissue exposure allowed for mobile phone users, a level that rarely occurs during typical phone use.

"My family and I won't change our mobile-phone habits based on this news", said George Gray, co-author of the book "Risk: A Practical Guide for Deciding What's Really Safe and What's Really Dangerous in the World Around You".
