Russian Space Agency Releases Video Of Failed Soyuz Launch

The failed Soyuz rocket separation

An investigation by the Russian space agency determined that a malfunctioning sensor caused a Soyuz rocket to fail shortly after it was launched in Kazakhstan on October 11. The MS-10 space capsule carrying American astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin separated from the launch vehicle and entered a ballistic trajectory, allowing it to land safely roughly 200 miles east of the launch point. Both crew members were uninjured.

Following the malfunction Russian space agency Roscosmos launched an investigation and the findings from that investigation were released yesterday.

"The launch ended up with a launcher failure caused by abnormal separation of one of the strap-on boosters (Block D) that hit with its nose the core stage (Block A) in the fuel tank area".

Analysts had expected the company to report revenue of $10.72 billion, according to Refinitiv data. Jonathan Chaplin, an analyst with NewStreet Research, said the results were very strong.

However, Roscosmos says that the cause of the October abort has been determined as a problem with a separation sensor pin in the first stage that was bent nearly seven degrees out of alignment.

Roscosmos says that the sensor pin was damaged during assembly of the rocket and that new preventative measures have been implemented to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.

The Canadian Space Agency is confirming that astronaut David Saint-Jacques will launch December 3 for a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station. Last week, Saint-Jacques said the October 11 emergency abort made him feel "even more confident" about the design of the Soyuz spacecraft and its emergency systems.
