Children's flu clinic to be held in Bangor Thursday

Flu season is upon us. Here’s what Vancouverites need to know.

The Douglas Public Health Network will have another free drive-thru flu shot clinic in Tri-City on November 4.

It will take place on the second floor of the Police Department Thursday from 3pm-5pm.

The vaccine is intended for most adults, as well as children six months of age and older.

It is a first come, first served basis.

In addition to the Fluzone high-dose vaccine for ages 65 and older, the health department also is offering the quadrivalent flu vaccine for 6-month-olds and up, which "is created to protect against four different flu viruses: two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses", Green said.

The flu season typically begins around November and can last well into the spring.

While the vaccine isn't ideal, it reduces the odds of getting sick or developing a serious complication if you do get the flu, Drevets said. Not only is it beneficial for your own health to get the flu shot, but it is beneficial for society as a whole. This makes getting vaccinated against the flu every year an important part of keeping Ontarians healthy.

What stood out about last year's flu season?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were approximately 80,000 deaths and 900,000 hospitalizations from influenza in the United States a year ago. According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic sleep deprivation can contribute to illnesses, and studies show that people who are chronically sleep deprived are more prone to getting sick after being exposed to a virus. A full list of locations where flu vaccines are administered in this county is available online at clintonhealth.org. You don't get the flu from a flu shot.

One thing that is debatable, however, is whether or not one should get the influenza vaccine.

Public Health Wales is urging all pregnant women to have the flu vaccine as a woman who catches flu during pregnancy is at higher risk of delivering her baby early and the risk of stillbirth is also increased.

"This year, for the first time, we are introducing a new vaccine for those aged 65 and over which will more effectively boost the immune system of older people, so that they are better protected". A lot of it had to do with people who are now on social media and and also the regular media who are not getting good information on vaccines. The flu vaccine is created with a deadened or weakened version of the virus that helps the body build antibodies to fight off the virus. I know it wasn't from the shot because outside of the live attenuated nasal spray, all the other vaccines do not contain live virus. Newhouse highlighted a vaccine called Flu Zone High Dose which is tailored for seniors because it helps strengthen their immune systems.

"The flu vaccine can not cause the flu", she said. Be careful about touching your face after you touch surfaces because influenza and other viruses and vermin can be on them.
