Bus crashes into river after passenger and driver fight

Rescuers conduct search and rescue operation at the site where a bus has plunged off a bridge into the Yangtze River in Wanzhou on October 28

A deadly bus accident in China's Chongqing city last Sunday was caused by a fist fight between the driver and a passenger, said local authorities on Friday (Nov 2).

Early reports from witnesses suggested the bus swerved to avoid another vehicle, crashing through the bridge barrier.

But the new footage shows the driver was being hit by a passenger and then struck her back.

Then, as he tries to regain control of the bus he swerves off the bridge, sending the bus plummeting 60 metres into the Yangtze river in the Wanzhou District of China's sprawling Chongqing city.

Dashcam footage from another vehicle shows the bus swerving, colliding with a auto and crashing through a barrier before plunging off the bridge.

More than 70 rescue boats were deployed to the scene, reported China Daily.

Passengers can be heard screaming in the disturbing footage, shared by Chinese state media.

Local police say the female passenger involved in the fight, a 48-year-old local, went up to the driver and asked to be let out after missing her stop.

As the quarrel escalated, the statement said, the woman hit the driver on the head with her mobile phone. Rescuers recovered the wreck of the bus Wednesday night.

The passenger and driver are now being held accountable for the fatal crash, which happened on October 28.

One poster on Weibo, Wanten888, said: "If we see any passenger quarrelling with bus driver, we shouldn't stay quiet!"

Fifteen people had been on the bus, including the driver.
