NYPD suspends nearly 3,000 body cameras after one explodes

"In the interim, the 2,990 officers previously assigned LE-5 cameras will not use a body-worn camera", the police spokesman's office added in the statement to Fox News.

The department said it's now suspending the use of all LE-5 body cams effective immediately.

The NYPD has pulled some Vievu body cameras from the streets after an LE-5 model (similar to the LE-3 seen here) exploded on Sunday.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has said he wants every patrol officer to wear a body camera by the end of 2019. There were no injuries sustained.

Police are now investigating the exploding battery. "The Department is in the process of collecting and removing the LE-5 cameras from the commands now".

6 magnitude quake jolts Canada
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the quakes, the first of which struck just before 11 p.m. No tsunami warnings were issued after a flurry of earthquakes off the Vancouver Island coast last night.

The New York Police Department pulled almost 3,000 body cameras off the streets after one exploded inside a Staten Island precinct early Sunday.

As for what caused the Vievu camera to catch fire, the NYPD believes the "incident revealed a potential for the battery inside the camera to ignite", but is now investigating.

Image: The NYPD has more than 15,000 body cameras deployed throughout the force.

More than 15,000 body cameras - which have also grown in use by emergency services in the United Kingdom in recent years - are deployed throughout the department. The NYPD says the issue forcing LE-5 cams to be suspended has not affected the other model.

Axon is also the firm behind those used by the Met, having announced a three-year deal to kit out its officers following a successful trial in 2015. "We will do whatever is necessary to quickly and safely resolve this situation".
