Man survives 'head-on' bull shark attack at nudist beach in Australia

Man escapes shark's jaws after punching predator in the head

A man survived a shark bite by punching it in the nose after it latched onto his arm near Newcastle city on Saturday, the latest shark attack at Australia's popular beaches and coasts, according to local media.

Paul Kenny, 50, was surfing at Samurai Beach, a naturist spot 200km north of Sydney, on Saturday morning when the animal, thought to be a bull shark, bit down on his arm.

The Inspector said there has been a history of shark attacks in recent years along the Eastern seabord area extending from Stockton Beach, up to Nelson Bay and into Hawksnest.

A witness said the first thing that came to Mr Kenny's mind was former pro-surfer Mick Fanning's own near-death experience "so he punched the shark".

He's receiving treatment for minor injuries in the John Hunter Hospital, with both Samurai and One Mile beaches closed for the day as a result.

"Because he had done it... that's what i did".

"I didn't know where it was and if it was going to take my legs", he said.

"I didn't think we would be treating a shark victim with no trousers on put it that way", he said.

The beach was closed last Tuesday after a whale washed ashore sparking fears of increased shark activity but was reopened on Friday.

The whale carcass was cut up and removed by National Parks and Wildlife yesterday.

Department of Conservation marine scientist and shark expert Clinton Duffy told the Herald he believes the shark was a great white based on the markings and tooth.
