Six kids in Brooklyn diagnosed with measles

Five of those children had yet to be vaccinated because they were under a year old or had had their immunizations delayed, and one had not yet developed immunity to the measles after being inoculated.

Six children below the age of 5 were diagnosed with measles in Brooklyn, health officials said Wednesday.

Of the kids affected in Brooklyn, one has since been sent to the hospital with pneumonia and another one has had an ear infection as a result of measles.

'Although measles is preventable, too many families are choosing to not vaccinate or delay vaccination, putting their children and other children at risk, ' acting Health Commissioner Dr Oxiris Barbot told NBC4.

The first case related to travel to Israel surfaced in late September, and two more cases due to separate global travelers in early October are leading to more cases of measles among non-immune residents, the health department said.

There's now an outbreak of the disease in the country - with 341 cases so far in Jerusalem, Haaretz reported.

The NYCHD says it plans to meet with rabbis and elected officials in Williamsburg on Thursday to talk about the importance of vaccines. Controlling the spread of the measles is almost impossible said one specialist in infectious disease who spoke to Haaretz on condition of anonymity.

Individuals who are considered to be protected or immune to the measles include those born before 1957, those who have had two doses of the MMR vaccine, those who have had the measles or those who have had their immunity confirmed by laboratory testing.

According to the Health Department, if one person catches measles, 90 percent of that person's non-immunized close contacts will also become infected.

The vaccine was introduced in 1963, and measles was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000. The LA Times estimates that 10 percent of children in private and religious schools in California go without protection from childhood diseases.

A similar outbreak has also grown in Jewish communities in Rockland County, home to many ultra-Orthodox enclaves, with the state health department confirming 11 measles cases on Tuesday.

Overseas, a Jerusalem outbreak of the measles has health officials extremely anxious, with 213 cases reported in September, more than half the total number of cases reported in 2018. People who are unvaccinated risk getting infected with measles and spreading it to others, and they may spread measles to people who can not get vaccinated because they are too young or have specific health conditions, the Health Department said.

Who Should Pay for Families Refusing to Vaccinate? Another child had received the first dose of the vaccine, but not the second. "These fees would directly support vaccination activities such as educational efforts, information systems, and outbreak response", he writes.
