Pennsylvania priest pleads guilty to sexual abuse of two boys

The Department of Justice has subpoenaed at least three Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania as part of an investigation into abuse by priests

"Today, Poulson is being held accountable and facing justice for his crimes", Shapiro said. Poulson then told the victim to make confession to the sexual assaults, which were heard by Poulson, according to the Attorney General's Office. The release states that one of the victims was assaulted more than 20 times in Cambridge Springs and Fryburg, and both victims were assaulted at a remote hunting camp in Jefferson County. In an effort to assault them, Poulson would bring the youths to the cabin and watch horror movies with them on his laptop.

Prosecutors say Poulson abused an altar boy in church rectories and had him confess afterward.

Meanwhile, attorneys general of several other states are now also investigating abuse and cover-ups by Catholic priests and leaders, subpoenaing dioceses in states such as New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico and Nebraska. He used the tools of the priesthood to further his abuse.

The subpoenas follow a state grand jury report in August that detailed hundreds of allegations of children being sexually abused by 300 "predator priests" in dioceses across Pennsylvania. His assignments included serving as Pastor of St. Agnes in Morrisdale, St. Michael's in Fryburg, St. Anthony of Padua in Cambridge Springs and St. Bernadette in Cambridge Springs. The two other dioceses did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and the dioceses of Allentown, Erie, Pittsburgh and Scranton acknowledged on Thursday they had received federal subpoenas. Its report echoed the findings of many earlier church investigations around the country in its description of widespread sexual abuse by clergy and church officials' concealment of it.

Though local prosecutors generally handle child sex abuse cases, federal prosecutors can step in at times. Every bishop, priest, deacon, employee, and volunteer, who have contact with children in any capacity, must undergo a background check and triennial training on how to prevent, recognize and report the sexual abuse of children.

"We know for a fact that there have been plenty of priests in the state of Pennsylvania who have taken children across state lines to New Jersey and NY and the hierarchy knew about the transfer of these children", Ms. Hamilton said.

Priests committed acts of abuse upon children, and were routinely shuttled to other parishes - while parishioners were left unaware of predators in their midst. "The diocese sees itself as a partner with law enforcement in its goal to eliminate the abuse of minors where it may occur".

"I stand with the 23 men and women of the Grand Jury who unanimously voted to recommend these four reforms", Shapiro said. The grand jurors said that the rest of the cases were too old to be prosecuted, because of statutes of limitations.

"The time of protecting powerful institutions over vulnerable children is over".

"This is just a breathtaking, stunning and very welcome development", said Michael Dolce, a lawyer who represents victims of sexual abuse.
