Morrison government transfers refugees to Australia from Nauru amid internal pressure

Chief medical officer Nicole Montana kicked off Nauru

Amid the heightened health concerns, Mr Morrison signalled he is willing to accept New Zealand's offer to resettle 80 asylum seeker children and their families from offshore detention on Nauru.

A senior Australian doctor offering medical care to refugees on Nauru has been arrested by police and will be deported from the island later today.

Meanwhile, the chief medical officer for contractor International Health and Medical Services on Nauru, Nicole Montana, left the island on Wednesday in mysterious circumstances.

An IHMS spokeswoman told News Corp Dr Montana was stood down yesterday "for a breach of Regional Processing Centre rules".

They want to speed up the medical transfers of these refugees to Australia.

He said the government would not transfer asylum seekers to New Zealand despite an offer from the government because "the advice of the government is people smugglers are marketing New Zealand as a destination, as a destination as a backdoor for Australia".

The Department of Home Affairs said it was a matter for IHMS and the government of Nauru, but stressed there had been no interruption to medical care.

Three Liberal MPs have also taken the extraordinary step of demanding Prime Minister Scott Morrison get children off the Pacific island, citing serious fears about their health.

"It is absolutely disgraceful to say that MSF's mental health care is no longer required; the mental health situation of the refugees indefinitely held on Nauru is devastating", MSF psychiatrist Beth O'Connor said.

Fed officials discussed hiking rates to 'restrictive' level
Under Powell, the Fed has been gradually raising rates as the economy has strengthened as a way to prevent a run-up in inflation. Trump followed up previous strong attacks on the Fed by complaining again that interest rates are rising too quickly.

But there's one condition - that they be legally blocked from ever setting foot in Australia. The legislation has been stuck since November 2016.

With concerns heightened on the government side, Labor strategists think it is possible some Liberals could support the private member's bill being proposed by the opposition to improve transfer procedures.

It comes as the Morrison Government faces increasing pressure from its opponents, the medical profession, and some of its own MPs, to remove children from the centre.

Labor, the Greens and a slew of crossbenchers had vowed to oppose the bill in the Senate, meaning it was sure to fail and was never put to a vote.

He also said: "The Greens will increase the humanitarian intake to 50,000 a year".

Mr Morrison is talking down the prospects of putting the bill to the vote this week.

The Centre Alliance party, which controls two crossbench votes, said it remained opposed to the bill as it now stood, but was willing to negotiate.

That legislation would prevent anyone transferred to New Zealand could not travel to Australia would need to occur first.

According to sources at the meeting, Scott Morrison suggested resettlement could be an option, but only if the government was able to guarantee that asylum seekers were not able to make their way to Australia subsequently.
