Marlins home-run structure 'Homer' to be moved outside

Board approves Miami Marlins plan to move home run sculpture outside Marlins Park

The Miami Herald reports that "Homer" will be moved outside the stadium, where it will still be active for home runs.

Having the home run sculpture was a small win to have when attending games at Marlins Park, but now fans will just have to get hyped for 90-loss seasons for the foreseeable future.

The approval to move the county-owned sculpture came down Tuesday from Miami-Dade County officials at the behest of minority owner Derek Jeter, who has made clear since joining the team that he wanted "Homer" gone.

"We appreciate the support and collaboration for our proposal from the county and the Art in Public Places trust", the Marlins said in a statement. The plan is for the spot to include a new multi-story spectator area for standing-room-only ticket holders.

President of business operations Chip Bowers said in August that would be part of an effort to reengage with the Miami and millennial audience, which he feels haven't been properly served. How do we embrace Coconut Grove, Coral Gables?

Grooms opposed moving the artwork.

The plan to move it became complicated, though, as the structure's creator, Red Grooms, said he would not allow it to be moved because his $2.5 million contract with the city stated the structure would remain inside Marlins Park. It illuminated with every Marlins home run, while pink flamingos flapped their wings and marlins jumped out of dancing waters, clearing a group of palm trees.

Jeter had been attempting to rid the wildly colorful, laughably and lovably kitsch staple of the park since at least January, as he puts his own stamp on what he wants the Marlins franchise to look like.

Marlins CEO Derek Jeter and his lamentable inclinations have reportedly won a grim victory. "We are always looking to make our fan experience better, and we are listening to what you are saying".
