President Trump warned Thursday he will "call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER" with Mexico if officials there don't stop the northward flow of a growing migrant caravan that's swelled in size to about 4,000 people.
Mr Trump threatened to withhold aid to the region as a caravan with several thousand Honduran migrants traveled this week through Guatemala to Mexico in hopes of crossing into the United States to escape violence and poverty in Central America. New data shows a spike in the number of people trying to cross the border, according to reports by NBC News, WaPo and elsewhere, suggesting Trump's baby-snatching border policy has been a bust.
The migrant caravan from Honduras has swelled in size despite President Donald Trump threatening to cut aid to the country.
Thursday's comments were not the first time Trump has threatened to close down the southern border entirely.
"We have today informed the countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador that if they allow their citizens, or others, to journey through their borders and up to the United States, with the intention of entering our country illegally, all payments made to them will STOP!" he tweeted.
The official also said the migrant caravan will be a "prominent" topic of discussion at those meetings.
As with a similar march in April, organizers of the march claim they will claim refugee status when they reach the US border with Mexico.
Trump appeared willing to end his new trade deal with Mexico if the caravan was not stopped.
He will meet with the presidents of both countries to "discuss our ongoing security cooperation efforts to disrupt the illicit movement of cash, weapons, drugs across our shared border as well as the issue of stemming illegal immigration and strengthening accountability for corruption and human rights abuses, and bringing members of transnational criminal organizations to justice", a senior State Department official said.
The president's warning echoes an earlier tweet on Wednesday, in which he again blasted Democrats for refusing to approve tighter border control and immigration laws.
Trump also suggested that the migrants hoping to enter the US are linked to crime and drugs that he said are "pouring in", and he called on Mexico to stop the "onslaught".
Rubio's comments come a day after Trump vowed "severe punishment" for the USA ally if they were found responsible. Business leaders and media partners have pulled out of FII because of Khashoggi's disappearance.
