Rosenstein: Mueller Probe Is 'Appropriate,' 'Independent'

Robert Mueller

Bloomberg notes that Mueller's findings may not be made public "if he doesn't secure unsealed indictments", as Rosenstein has some discretion to decide what is publicly released and what is disclosed to Congress.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is prepared to release his "core-findings" to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in the immediate aftermath of the 2018 midterm elections, reports Fox News.

Rosenstein told the Journal the investigation has already exposed Russian attempts to infiltrate the presidential election.

Once Mueller and Rosenstein deliver their report, Congress will be able to do what it deems appropriate with the information, including further investigation and possibly impeachment.

Though Rosenstein's relationship with Trump has been fraught amid the ongoing Mueller probe, Trump has declared he is not aiming to fire Rosenstein - though he is expected to make changes at the Justice Department after next month's midterm elections, with Attorney General Jeff Sessions' departure widely anticipated, the Journal noted.

"It is also plausible that he assured Trump that it would wrap up soon during their private conversations and that his reasons for doing so are complex - uncertainty about what would happen if it didn't wrap up, a desire not to be fired, etc.", Mariotti said. This comes after Trump has increasingly and publicly complained about the probe - which he refers to as a "witch hunt" on Twitter and during his numerous campaign rallies - as well as the decision by Sessions to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation.

"People are entitled to be frustrated, I can accept that", Rosenstein said in regard to the investigation.

Ever since Robert Mueller was named special counsel to investigate Trump campaign collusion with foreign governments, and Donald Trump's obstruction of justice into that investigation, Trump lawyers have been promising that the probe will be completed "soon".
