Arab leaders stand by Saudi Arabia after journalist's disappearance

Saudi Arabia is considering an admission that journalist Jamal Khashoggi died during an interrogation that went wrong, U.S. media reported yesterday. The officials were not authorized to comment publicly on the matter and requested anonymity. It said one of the sources told them that the intention was to abduct Khashoggi and it had not been authorized by the Saudi government.

Reuters and Associated Press journalists observed the cleaning crew carrying buckets, mops, cases of trash bags, cleaning solution, bleach, and two cases of milk through the front door of the consulate shortly before Turkish investigators were to inspect the building for evidence in the Khashoggi disappearance.

Khashoggi, who writes for the Washington Post's global opinion section, came to be known as a sharp critic of the Saudi Arabian government. Pompeo is expected to go to Riyadh and later visit Turkey.

Britain, Germany and France have jointly called for a "credible investigation, ' Egypt has backed Saudi Arabia and warned of "false claims" against its ally and Australia's foreign minister has said she is 'deeply concerned".

Trump's comments came after a telephone conversation with King Salman, father of the crown prince, the first such talks since the crisis erupted. He and Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, have forged close ties.
