Turkish investigators again searched the Saudi consulate in Istanbul overnight as part of a probe into Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance, as US President Donald Trump said he did not want to abandon his Saudi ally over the missing journalist.

"We encourage Turkish-Saudi collaboration and look forward to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia conducting a thorough, credible, transparent and prompt investigation, as announced", the spokesman said.

Mr Khashoggi, a Saudi national who contributed to The Washington Post and criticised policies of King Salman's son Crown Prince Mohammed, has not been seen since Oct 2, when he went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain official documents for his upcoming marriage. Saudi Arabia and Turkey have set up a joint team to investigate the disappearance.

Mr Khashoggi, a 60-year-old Saudi dissident and United States resident, visited the consulate on 2 October to obtain papers needed to get married. Khashoggi also covered the Gulf War, and his time as a foreign correspondent quickly propelled him into a successful career as a journalist and editor in Saudi Arabia.

A man who previously traveled with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's entourage to the United States entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul just before writer Jamal Khashoggi vanished there, according to images published Thursday by a pro-government Turkish newspaper.

Citing unidentified security sources, daily Yeni Şafak stated that the police "will not limit its investigation to the Saudi consulate building and the consul's residence in Istanbul". "The king firmly denied any knowledge of it", Trump said.

Mr Trump denied he was trying "to cover" for Saudi Arabia.

"We remain very troubled by the disappearance of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi", the statement said. But his complaint about "guilty until proven innocent" and comparison to the Kavanaugh situation suggested he was giving the Saudis more leeway than other allies.

Khashoggi went to the consulate on October 2 to get documents for his upcoming marriage to a Turkish woman while his fiancee waited outside. She and Turkish authorities say he never emerged and he has not been heard from since.
