Cavaliers agree with F Nance on 4-year, $44.8 million deal

Carmelo Anthony's debut was biggest dud on huge NBA night

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Larry Nance Jr. could miss Wednesday's season opener against the Toronto Raptors.

Nance's father played for the Cavaliers for seven of his 14 National Basketball Association seasons, fueling the son's excitement about the extension.

Kevin Love led the team in scoring with an inefficient 21 points on five-of-18 shooting from the field. It feels a bit like the Cavaliers are negotiating with themselves here, as it's hard to imagine any rival team giving Nance the bag and forcing Cleveland to match an offer they're not prepared to match.

Once the agreement was secured, Nance signed his contract in front of Cavaliers employees on the indoor practice court in Quicken Loans Arena.

Without LeBron James, the Cavaliers mental toughness was challenged. Let's see if he can make it count when their season tips off.

Arriving in Cleveland at the behest of James, Love played on four finals teams in four years - including the 2016 squad that brought the first championship to Cleveland in 52 years - while watching one of the greatest motivators in team sports lead by example.

Nance Jr. was acquired in a February trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, along with guard Jordan Clarkson.

The Cavs did a good job of fighting on the road against a much more talented team.

Giving up their leading scorer and fan favorite DeRozan for Leonard, who can depart after one season, was a risk that the Raptors were willing to take after repeated playoff failures.

"I don't have any regrets about leaving", says the former No. 5 lottery pick, who grew up between California and Oregon.

"I'm actually at a loss for words right now", Nance said about the extension.
