'It's OK to be white' bill defeated in Australian Senate

Multiculturalism

Back in the September sitting of parliament, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson moved a motion imploring the Senate to acknowledge that "it is okay to be white" and "the deplorable rise of anti-white racism".

Others in government who supported the motion were the Deputy Senate Leader and Trade Minister Simon Birmingham, Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion and Deputy National leader Bridget McKenzie.

Finance minister Mathias Cormann said the failure was with the government's internal process for letting senators know how they should vote on the bills of the day.

"The Government senators' actions in the Senate this afternoon confirm that the Government deplores racism of any kind", he said.

But a clearly unimpressed Mr Morrison described his senators' support for the motion as "regrettable", prompting Senator Cormann to apologise a short time later.

Latest On The Injury To Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa
Saban labeled the injury a sprain on Thursday and noted that Tagovailoa hadn't missed any reps in practice. Trainers tended to Tagovailoa on the field, and he was able to jog off under his own power.

"It appears that, of the very large number of motions on which my office's views are routinely sought, this one was not escalated to me because it was interpreted in my office as a motion opposing racism", he said.

"People have a right to be proud of their cultural background whether they are black, white, or brindle".

Senator Hanson's motion failed only narrowly last night, with Labor, the Greens, Victorian Senator Derryn Hinch and South Australian Senators Tim Storer, Rex Patrick and Sterling Griff opposed, but a swathe of Government senators - including Communications Minister Mitch Fifield and Small Business Minister Michaelia Cash - voting in favour.

Senator Hanson, who runs on an anti-immigration and anti-Muslim platform, is well-known for pulling headline grabbing stunts, perhaps most famously when she wore a burqa into the chamber.

It is true that the slogan "It's Okay to Be White" is thought to have originated among alt-right users of the 4chan anonymous message board, but it appears to be Senator Keneally and the other opponents of Ms Hanson's motion who have played into their hands - as the slogan's reputed objective is to goad leftists into voicing opposition to the statement, revealing what its proponents consider to be a latent anti-white bias.
