Garcia beats Pliskova to win Tianjin title

Karolina Pliskova Tianjin 2018

The 16th-ranked Garcia battled through a narrow first set before streaking away in the second to beat the Czech top seed 7-6 (9/7), 6-3.

Garcia extended to 6-2 her record in tour-level finals and clinched the fifth title in a row after the defeats to Timea Bacsinszky in Acapulco and Monterrey in 2015.

Pliskova's failure to take the title also kept her from confirming a berth in the WTA Finals.

Pliskova remains well placed in the Race to Singapore, coming into this week eighth in the standings, but this was a missed opportunity to have a chance to officially punch her ticket on Sunday.
