Trump Accuses NBC of Misleading Public on His Praise for Confederate General

Remedial history Trump flunks basics at Ohio rally

Trump made the remarks during a campaign rally in Lebanon, Ohio, on Friday.

Trump's praise of Lee came after he asked black voters to "honor" the GOP by voting for Republicans in November.

Trump claimed Lincoln feared Lee, saying that after an unnamed battle, "Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, 'I can't beat Robert E. Lee'".

"Last night I was disheartened to hear Donald Trump, our president, make comments about Robert E. Lee as a great general, as an honorable man", he said in a video posted to Twitter.

Trump told a story from the Civil War of President Abraham Lincoln dealing with the victories of confederate general Robert E. Lee. But on Sunday, NBC had to correct that tweet since, as it turns out, Trump was actually praising Union General (and future U.S. President) Ulysses S. Grant in the clip. SPLC wrote, "President Trump's praise of Robert E. Lee is the kind of revisionist history that has kept Jim Crow alive in the South for more than 150 years".

Trump said the state of OH gave the country a "general who was incredible".

3 arrested after NY street brawls following far-right event
Andrew Cuomo (Democrat) declared in a statement Saturday that the city has no tolerance for the Proud Boys. The three arrested face assault charges and are awaiting arraignment Saturday in Manhattan criminal court.

As an example of a more neutral headline, USA Today had an article titled "Trump gives Civil War history at OH rally, describing Lee, Grant as "great" generals". Trump praised Ulysses S Grant repeatedly during the speech, especially since the general was originally from Ohio.

View the president's comments on Lee and Grant below.

"An earlier tweet misidentified the general President Trump described as "incredible" at a rally in OH", they tweeted. "They said to Lincoln, "You can't use him anymore, he's an alcoholic" and Lincoln said, 'I don't care if he's an alcoholic, frankly, get me six or seven just like him'".

Trump, for his part, charged that NBC had intentionally misrepresented his speech about Ulysses S Grant. "He drank a little bit too much", Trump said to laughter.

Trump did indeed say that Lee was an incredible general.

"NBC News has totally and purposely changed the point and meaning of my story about General Robert E Lee and General Ulysses Grant", he wrote in a tweet on October 14. Trump continued with his praise of Grant, and repeated again that both Lee and Grant were great generals, and said to the OH audience of Grant "he came from right here".
