Adobe shows off ‘real’ Photoshop on iPad

Adobe finally has a full version of Photoshop for the iPad

Earlier this year Adobe confirmed that it was working on a full-featured version of Photoshop for the iPad, but no real details on the product were given.

According to Adobe, Photoshop CC on the iPad will allow users to open and edit native Photoshop Document files (PSD) and includes the Photoshop layers panel. Adobe didn't want to tell anyone in case the experiment was unsuccessful, but a few months later, a "proof of life" concept of the full Photoshop app was launching on an iPad.

As the new app is part of Creative Cloud, users should be able to continue editing between devices seamlessly. This marks the first time the software will be available off the desktop in a full-fledged and purely touch-optimized package since Adobe originally released Photoshop 1.0 almost three decades ago.

Adobe today announced the general availability of Premiere Rush CC (previously called Project Rush), an all-in-one video app for all your devices (PCs, mobile devices and tablets).

The long-held notion that the iPad could not be considered a productivity device until it was able to run actual programs and not just scaled down app experiences, was largely held in place by the omission of Adobe's feature-heavy creative suite, until now.

As Adobe's Pam Clark explains on the company's blog, the process of bringing the complete Photoshop experience to Apple's tablet began when two engineers asked if they try to get the program up and running on an iPad using the real Photoshop code. Adobe is working on Android support for the future.

Today's announcement highlights what an exciting time it is to be an iPad user. Project Gemini is said to pair smoother raster and vector drawing with classic and dynamic Photoshop brushes.

Rush is powered by many existing technologies that are available in professional Adobe tools. That full list of missing features is unavailable at this time, but we're sure to learn more as the launch approaches. As for the timeframe, Adobe has yet to milestones or specific dates.

Microsoft has made a concerted effort to attract the Adobe heavy creative types with its Surface Studio and Surface Pro devices by leveraging its deep partnership with Adobe and tweaks both companies have made to support one another's efforts.
