Australian Woman's Bruises Show Why You Should Never Drive in a Hailstorm

Queensland was hit with a super-cell storm that rained down tennis-ball-sized hail leaving thousands without power. Fiona Simpson was caught in the middle of

A young mother in Australia was covered in cuts and bruises after she shielded her 4-month-old daughter from a risky supercell tornado.

The storm began shortly after midday yesterday, with tennis-ball-sized hail falling at Kumbia near Kingaroy, tearing off roofs and even knocking birds from the trees.

Fiona Simpson, the mother, was beaten black and blue by hail stones while shielding her baby and she posted pictures on Facebook.

The storm got so intense two of her vehicle windows were smashed in by the hailstones. Aside from large hail, torrential rain, powerful winds and at least one tornado were reported, with some 10,000 homes left without power.

Simpson suffered several nasty bruises, but her grandmother was more seriously injured.

But Fiona said she wouldn't hesitate from doing the same thing again. "I jumped in the back seat and just covered her with my body, hoping for it to pass, but it just got heavier and heavier". She heard a loud bang. "I couldn't see in front of me, I couldn't even see the line on the road".

Photos later uploaded on Facebook by Simpson on Thursday show large welts all over her back, shoulders, arms and face. While she was anxious for her daughter, she was relieved to find Clara only had minor scratches. The ordeal left her with large bruises and cuts to much of her body.

"I've learnt my lesson, never drive in a hail storm", she said.

"I wasn't driving very fast because I couldn't see very well..."

Once the rain started they pulled the auto over to the side of the road to wait out the wild weather, but Fiona said conditions worsened rapidly.

Simpson told ABC News she was driving home and was forced to pull over near Nanango, eastern Australia, as unrelenting hail made driving impossible. "I pulled over because it was just way too risky".

"Generally cooler temperatures, and we'll have a lot more cloud cover around and that should keep the temperatures down as well plus we've got a pretty good southerly change that's moved in over the southern parts of the state today so that should also keep those temperatures down".

Fiona Simpson was inside her auto with daughter Clara and grandmother when the tornado hit Kingoray in Queensland's south-east around 3 pm on Friday. Fiona Simpson wrote on Facebook.

The town of Tansey, west of Gympie, bore the brunt of the tornado that hit on Thursday afternoon, with some buildings there severely damaged.

Thankfully, nobody has been killed in the extreme weather.

Fiona Simpson, 23, was caught in her vehicle when the storm hit near Kingaroy, Queensland, on Thursday, sending huge hailstones smashing through her auto windows, The West Australian reported.

Tansey resident Greg Hellmuth said the noise from the tornado, which was forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology, was "unbelievable", forcing his family to take shelter under a bed.

He said: "We ran inside and everything was going sideways, all the trees were going sideways, this roof went up (in the air) and down".
