The photo of Viktoria Marinova, the journalist who was raped and strangled on Saturday, is placed on the Liberty Monument in Ruse, Bulgaria.

The body of 30-year-old Marinova - who presented a current affairs talk programme called "Detector" for the small TVN television channel - was discovered on a riverside path in the northern Bulgarian town of Ruse on Saturday.

A Bulgarian Orthodox priest performed a liturgy with a procession passing the casket to pay last respects before the funeral.

Ruse Mayor Plamen Stoilov told reporters that "the brutal slaying has cast a shadow over the peaceful city".

Bulgaria's chief prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov named the suspect as Severin Krasimirov, born in 1997. He has been charged in absentia for Marinova's rape and killing and Bulgaria has sought his extradition from Germany, where he was arrested on an worldwide warrant.

A 21-year-old man arrested over the killing of a Bulgarian television journalist has confessed to attacking her, but denies raping and robbing her, German prosecutors have said.

Prosecutors in the city of Celle, who are handling the case in Germany, said the suspect confessed to them during his interrogation that he had attacked the reporter in a park while he was under the "strong influence of alcohol and drugs".

Under an expedited procedure requested by prosecutors and agreed to by the accused, he must be extradited within 10 days of the court's ruling, made on Thursday.

On her last television show, on 30 September, Ms Marinova introduced two journalists who were investigating suspected corruption involving European Union funds and said her own show, Detector, on local television station NTV, would carry out similar investigations.

In a statement, the German prosecutor said Mr Krasimirov denied intending to kill her, raping her or robbing her.

While the true reasons remain unknown, The Times can reveal that two British companies are linked to a network of Bulgarian businesses allegedly involved in the corruption which featured in Marinova's final report. "A free press strengthens democracy and deserves protection".
