Mohammed Dewji, the president of MeTL Group, which operates in 10 countries across sectors ranging from agriculture to transport and food, was abducted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam police chief Lazaro Mambosasa also implicated foreigners in the crime during a press conference, adding they had "shot into the air" before bustling Dewji into their auto. The official disclosed during a press conference that the assailants had fired shots prior to taking Dewji. "We are questioning the staff who were on duty at the time", the police chief detailed.

Then the raiders bolted from the hotel with Dewji - who was entering a gym at the time - and peeled off with him inside the auto, toward the Masaki neighborhood, the driver told the outlet.

Dewji, 43, is worth $1.5 billion and is described as the only billionaire in Tanzania. He's also the primary shareholder in a Dar es Salaam-based football team, Simba. It's the sixth abduction of a billionaire in Africa this year, but the first in Tanzania, reports the Citizen.
