Social security checks to increase slightly next year

Social Security Benefits to Get 2.8% Boost in 2019

Social Security will provide a 2.8 percent increase in benefits next year, marking the largest increase for retirees since 2012.

The average recipient in 2018 got an estimated $1,405 per month in benefits.

Though the difference may seem modest, it's the highest increase for social security checks in seven years. U.S. President Barack Obama recently stated that he can't guarantee retirees will receive their Social Security checks in August if the House and Senate cannot reach an agreement on reducing the deficit. But in May, a survey by the Senior Citizens League found that more than 40 percent of retirees reported that the adjustments were completely eaten away by their Medicare Part B premiums.

In 2012, Social Security was given a 3.6 percent increase.

Last month, the current ISS crew discovered a hole in the vessel that Russian Federation claims was drilled deliberately. Glitches found in Russia's Proton and Soyuz rockets in 2016 were traced to manufacturing flaws at the plant in Voronezh.

The end result is a boost in disability pay, dependents compensation, clothing allowances and a handful of other veterans benefits, set to start at the beginning of January.

Annual increases in Social Security and retirement annuities for many federal employees are determined each year based on changes in a component of the consumer price index. Seniors count on the money to help keep pace with rising prices for health care and housing.

Senior advocacy groups hailed the increase but said it still wasn't enough to cover the living costs of older Americans.

The group supports pegging cost of living increases instead to a measure of inflation specifically tailored to people older than age 62, which factors in higher healthcare costs.
