Billy McFarland, the organizer behind last year's disastrous Fyre Festival in the Bahamas, has been sentenced to six years in prison for fraud charges. "Let's just do it and be legends, man", a marketing executive for the festival reportedly said as the event's imminent catastrophe became increasingly evident.
"McFarland allegedly presented fake documents to induce investors to put over a million dollars into his company and the fiasco called the Fyre Festival", Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon H. Kim said in a statement past year when he announced the charges against McFarland.
Fyre Festival took place in April past year, billed as "the culture experience of the decade". Tickets to the festival were sold for $450 to over $12,000. His company filed bankruptcy, he took a plea deal, and eventually pled guilty to two counts of wire fraud.
"The remorse I feel is crushing", McFarland said in the court. "I lived every day with the weight of knowing that I literally destroyed the lives of my friends and family".
