Facebook Rolls Out 3D Photos with AI-Simulated Depth for Portrait Shots

Facebook 3D

For iPhone users, the feature is available starting today but the rollout is incremental so it might be a while before you actually see the feature in your Facebook App. The new will capture distance between the subject in the foreground and the background to generate 3D photos.

"3D photos" draw from the depth map that is automatically created by the dual camera phones, and an AI system then adds depth and movement (as you scroll) to create a realistic 3D rendering.

How to view a Facebook 3D Photo?

"Everyone will be able to see 3D photos in News Feed and VR today, while the ability to create and share 3D photos begins to roll out today", the Facebook 360 team wrote in a blog-post on Thursday. Users can also view 3D photos in VR using the Oculus Browser on Oculus Go or Firefox on Oculus Rift.

All Facebook users are in for a visual surprise, as 3D photos are about to appear in their feeds. According to The Verge, a "3D Photo" feature will come to Android-powered flagship smartphones (the ones featuring a dual-camera setup on the back) such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and LG V35. But at the moment, the feature is not available on those devices. Of course, since this is done through a ton of software trickery, the results are not always ideal and you don't actually get a 3D model of what you're viewing.
