Khashoggi, a wealthy former government insider who had been living in the U.S.in self-imposed exile, had gone to the consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get paperwork he needed for his upcoming marriage while his Turkish fiancee waited outside. His fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, had waited outside. The Washington Post is leading calls to uncover the truth, calling the incident, if true, a "monstrous crime".
Saudi officials meant to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia, the WashingtonPost reported the source as saying, but it was unclear what they meant to do with him - and whether the US ever warned Khashoggi of the threat he faced.
The image was given to the Post by someone close to the Turkish investigation and released by the United States daily soon after Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan challenged the Saudis to prove he left the consulate unharmed.
Turkey says it will conduct a search of the Istanbul consulate, while Saudi Arabia's foreign ministrysaid the country was "open to co-operation" and a search of the building could go ahead.

The foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has warned Saudi Arabia that its friendship with the United Kingdom depends on shared values, after he demanded answers over claims that a Saudi hit squad may have played a role in the disappearance and possible killing of Jamal Khashoggi.
