Rocket carrying space station crew fails in mid air, crew safe

U.S. astronaut Nick Hague right and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin crew members of the mission to the International Space Station wave as they board the rocket prior to the launch of Soyuz-FG rocket at the Russian leased Baikonur cosmodrome Kazakhs

The two astronauts are making an emergency landing after a Russian booster rocket carrying them into orbit to the International Space Station has failed after launch.

The Soyuz-FG rocket booster which carries the Soyuz MS-10 capsule is pictured on its way to the International Space Station.

Those precious few minutes of elation in Peabody quickly turned into an agonizing wait, as NASA confirmed there had been a booster problem with the rocket and the crew had to make an emergency exit.

"NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and the NASA team are monitoring the situation carefully".

The Russia Soyuz rocket was carrying a Russian and United States astronaut on board.

"The crew is returning to Earth in a ballistic descent mode".

"There was an issue with the booster from today's launch", a NASA statement said.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine has released a statement about today's (Oct. 11) failed Soyuz crew launch to the International Space Station, which resulted in an emergency ballistic landing shortly after liftoff for the US astronaut and Russian cosmonaut aboard.

Search-and-rescue teams were headed to the area where the capsule was expected to come down for what a NASA TV announcer said was likely to be a "hard landing".

RIA news agency, citing its own source, reported that Russian Federation had made a decision to suspend all manned space launches following the "Soyuz" failure. "Search and rescue crews are always pre-staged in the event that something like this does happen". Last month, an oxygen leak was found in the International Space Station that Russia's space chief said was caused deliberately.

There's no word on what, exactly, caused the Soyuz's booster to malfunction. "The emergency rescue systems of the MS-Soyuz spacecraft worked smoothly".

The live feed was closely monitored by scientists at Roscosmos and NASA, where people were seen glued to the screens, hoping for the best.
