Dramatic Footage Shows Moment Inside Soyuz Capsule When Booster Rocket Failed

Russian Soyuz rocket suffers failure on launch, set to return back to Earth

The rocket took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan with Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and United States astronaut Nick Hague on board at 2.10 pm Indian time.

A Reuters reporter who observed the launch from around 1 km away said it had gone smoothly in its initial stages and that the failure of the booster rocket must have occurred at higher altitude.

Two astronauts had to make an emergency landing Thursday after the rocket that was supposed to carry them to the International Space Station puttered out mid-flight.

Nasa astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos's Alexei Ovchinin were said to be in good condition after landing in Kazakhstan and have exited their capsule.

A senior Cabinet official says that Russia is suspending manned space launches pending a probe into a Russian booster rocket failure minutes after the launch.

Hague was originally scheduled to participate in spacewalks in the coming weeks to replace batteries on the outside of the space station. Ovchinin spent six months on the orbiting outpost in 2016.

An American astronaut and Russian cosmonaut were forced to abort their mission to the International Space Station on Thursday, after a rocket failure mid-flight.

The capsule had parachuted to Earth about 12 to 15 miles outside Zhezqazghan, a small city in central Kazakhstan, and neither of the crew members was injured, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, who watched the launch at Baikonur along with his Russian counterpart, said that a "thorough investigation into the cause of the incident will be conducted".

Search and rescue teams were heading to the area to recover the crew.

During a trip to Moscow this week, Bridenstine emphasized the importance of continuing to work with Russia's NASA equivalent, Roscosmos.

The Russian Soyuz spacecraft is now the only vehicle for ferrying crews to the International Space Station following the retirement of the US space shuttle fleet.

A government commission has been formed to investigate the cause of the accident, according to a tweet from Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos. Russian Federation stands to lose that monopoly in the coming years with the arrival of SpaceX's Dragon v2 and Boeing's Starliner crew capsules.

The rocket took off from Kazakhstan and was on its way to the International Space Station.

A Russian Soyuz rocket carrying a new U.S. Everything had been going quite smoothly for Roscosmos ahead of the weird hole discovered in one of their Soyuz spacecraft which was (and still is) attached to the International Space Station.

It can hold a crew of up to six people and at present has three people aboard, two men - a German and a Russian - as well as one female US astronaut.
