Climate Change Is Bad for Our Mental Health

Health Problems, Global Warming Linked, Per Study

In a new study, researchers found that along with increasing global temperatures comes a corresponding increase in mental-health issues.

The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published this report this week (Monday 8th October 2018) saying that the greenhouse emissions are at their highest at present and at given rates they could spell disaster. This could happen 22 years before the 2040 deadline set before, they add. The author of that study, Dr. Jonathan Patz, a professor and director of the Global Health Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, told CNN that, if anything, he expects the newer study underestimates the "stress and despair" likely to be caused by government inaction in the face of climate change.

On the heels of a United Nations report that warned we have until 2030 to stop climate change from raising temperatures above a key threshold, another study found that the increasing heat could also lead to a decline to mental health.

Worldwide, it is estimated that one in five adolescents experience mental health challenges, though most remain under-diagnosed and untreated. Researchers warned that as the earth's temperatures rose, the rain fall also increased due to increased water evaporation.

"We find that shifting from monthly temperatures between 25 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius to greater than 30 degrees Celsius increases the probability of mental health difficulties by 0.5 percentage points, that 1 degree Celsius of 5-year warming associates with a 2 percent point increase in the prevalence of mental health issues, and that exposure to Hurricane Katrina associates with a 4 percent point increase in this metric", the study's abstract reads.

Tarun Dua, mental health expert at WHO, explained: "Half of mental health disorders arise before the age of 14".

It also recommended investing in mental health resilience-building through parents and teachers; and psycho-social provision in schools and community spaces, especially in hardship contexts such as conflict and natural disaster settings. "In that world, the effect between hot temperatures and mental-health outcomes might be reduced". Further low-income individuals seemed to be affected more (60 percent more) with climate change than other income groups. They write that humans could possibly adapt by, "psychological coping mechanisms, such as avoidance, seeking social support, or fostering mental preparedness".

WHO noted that "evidence is growing that promoting and protecting adolescent mental health benefits not just adolescents' health, in the short- and the long-term".
