Scientists Warn of Disastrous Global Warming in Near Future

A chart that's part of a new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows a range of global warming pos

Increasingly, you don't have to convince Australian farmers of that.

US President Donald Trump said he has yet to read a United Nations report warning of global warming-caused chaos unless drastic action is taken and added that he is sceptical.

But the take-home for Donner from this report is the consequences for other parts of the world if warming exceeds 1.5 C.

If 1.5 degrees of warming does occur, Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, including countries like Japan, China, Egypt, and the US will experience increased flooding by 2040.

This target was long considered the threshold for the most risky effects of climate change, including the mass destruction of coral reefs, widespread food shortages, destructive wildfires and coastal flooding.

Carbon emissions need to reach "net zero" by 2050 and almost halve from 2010 levels by 2030.

"It's telling us we need to reverse emissions trends and turn the world economy on a dime", Myles Allen, an Oxford University climate scientist and an author of the report, told The New York Times.

Wired is a lot less diplomatic about the crisis: If we don't keep emissions at a steady 1.5 degree temperature rise in the next dozen years followed by going carbon-neutral by 2050, "the consequences will be disastrous".

Global net human-caused Carbon dioxide emissions would need to fall by about 45% from 2010 levels by 2030, reaching "net zero" around 2050, says the report. Adding 50 percent more warming to reach 1.5 degrees won't simply increase impacts by the same percentage-bad as that would be.

Kenya: At least 50, including eight children, killed in bus crash
In December 2017, as many as 36 people had died in a head-on collision between a bus and a lorry on a highway in central Kenya. At least 50 people, including seven children, were killed in a bus crash west of Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday, police said.

"Twenty-40% of the global human population live in regions that, by the decade 2006-2015, had already experienced warming of more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial in at least one season". Temperatures would be 1.5C higher between 2030 and 2052 if the world continued at its current pace, it warned.

The report is also pretty explicit in claiming that "unprecedented changes" are required to limit warming to 1.5℃.

The report stressed the half-degree difference was life changing.

At current levels of greenhouse gas emissions, earth could pass the 1.5 C marker as early as 2030, and no later than mid-century, the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change reports with "high confidence".

.

Debra Roberts, co-chair of IPCC Working Group II (which assesses the impacts of climate change) said the report gives policymakers and practitioners "the information they need to make decisions that tackle climate change while considering local context and people's needs".

Around 6 percent of insects, 8 percent of plants, and 4 percent of vertebrates are projected to be negatively affected by global warming of 1.5°C, namely by shrinking their natural geographic range, compared with 18 percent of insects, 16 percent of plants and 8 percent of vertebrates for global warming of 2°C.

The sea level would rise by 10 cm less by 2100, ice-free summers in the Arctic Ocean would be significantly less frequent, and coral reefs would decline by 70 to 90 per cent instead of disappearing entirely, the report said. But it is change on a scale we have never experienced before: "There is no historical precedent for the scale of the necessary transitions, in particular in a socially and economically sustainable way".

Such "carbon removal" might happen by developing better technology to take out carbon dioxide from the atmosphere - now an extremely expensive process - or by planting many more forests that could be harvested and burned for energy, with emissions pumped into underground storage.

The summary backed the use of carbon pricing, and said governments needed to make a decisive shift towards renewable energy.
