Kavanaugh makes US Supreme Court debut

Grassley made waves last week for speculating there aren't more female senators on the Judiciary Committee because 'it's a lot of work.'

"If I'm chairman, they won't take it up", said Grassley, whose committee is charged with holding hearings on Supreme Court nominees.

"It's a lot of work not just for women, it's a lot of work for men", he said.

"We've seen a 500 percent increase in our fundraising at the end of the month as tensions have been boiling over in Washington and voters have started to pay attention", Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel explained on Fox News Tuesday. Then-president Barack Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland, but Republicans used their majority to prevent Garland from even getting a Senate hearing. They point out he served for 12 years on the country's second-most important court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where he penned more than 300 opinions, many of which were upheld by the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh emphatically denied the allegations. Two other women accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct dating to the 1980s.

Sixty-two percent (62%) of Republicans are more likely to vote because of the Kavanaugh controversy, compared to 54% of Democrats and 46% of voters not affiliated with either major political party. It's hard to recruit senators of either gender for the committee, he said.

"Seriously, Hillary?" was the reaction of Republican Congressman Steve Scalise, who was seriously wounded a year ago when a shooter - who was a registered Democrat - targeted a Congressional Republican baseball practice in Virginia.

ActBlue - an online fundraising platform for Democrats - raised almost $10 million on October 5 - the day the Senate held a procedural vote on moving Kavanaugh's nomination forward - and another $9 million on October 6, the day the upper chamber formally confirmed him.

President Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday that the American public wouldn't put up with an attempt to unseat Kavanaugh.

Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that "nobody's going to beat" Alaska Sen. Almost two-thirds, or 63%, of likely women voters said they will vote for the Democratic congressional nominee in November, compared to 33% of likely women voters who said they'll vote Republican.

President Donald Trump has said Alaskans "will never forgive" Murkowski and that she'll "never recover" politically. He noted that Murkowski won election on write-in votes in 2010 and said, "She's about as strong as you can possibly be in Alaska".

McConnell declined to weigh in on a possible replacement except to say he or she would not be coming from the ranks of his slim 51-seat Senate majority.

"Thank you for USMCA and Mr. President thank you for the year-round E15, our farmers thank you, our Iowans thank you", Reynolds told the crowd during her remarks.

Justice Kavanaugh can be expected to cast crucial votes on those issues as well as gun control, immigration, voting rights and others.

Kavanaugh had been accused of sexual misconduct in high school and college.
