U.S. Adds Maduro’s Wife to Sanctions List

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro walks with his wife Cilia Flores upon their arrival at the airport in Beijing

Trump highlighted the more than two million Venezuelans who fled their country as a result of President Nicolás Maduro's socialist governing regime. Others include Vice President Delcy Eloina Rodriguez Gomez and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez, the statement said.

Among the figures targeted by the USA are First Lady of Venezuela Cilia Flores, who used to serve as attorney general under the late Hugo Chavez, and is now a legislator. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week said sanctions on Venezuela were in the pipeline. "Treasury will continue to impose a financial toll on those responsible for Venezuela's tragic decline, and the networks and front-men they use to mask their illicit wealth". Maduro is widely unpopular but has clung to power through what the USA says is rigged elections and corruption.

"All nations of the world should resist socialism and the misery that it brings to everyone", he said, pointing to the economic disaster in Venezuela.
