North Carolina flooded with dead fish after Hurricane Florence water recedes

Flooding of the Little Pee Dee River is nearing the crest in Brittons Neck, S.C., but many residents are concerned that the floodwaters will increase damage to their community, Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018.

"Kelly and some of those residents had to be evacuated by helicopter because the water was so high regular vehicles could not enter", said Bladen County Commissioner Arthur Bullock. She said the animals needed to be cared for because the veterinarian's office was closed. Hedges told USA Today, "If they can't find the owners, the pets went from a safe place to a kill shelter".

Hedges was arrested Friday, and many have since rallied behind her. In total, 27 pets fell into Hedges' care, 17 cats and 10 dogs.

"The goal was to make sure that they were not out there drowning", Hedges told WNCN, a local television station.

The animals came from the streets, where volunteers found them, and from owners who had to evacuate but couldn't bring their pets with them, said Kathie Davidson, who volunteers for a nonprofit that Hedges founded a few years ago in Goldsboro, N.C. numerous animals were sick, injured and neglected.

Floodwaters have begun to recede farther inland.

"You need to remember this was during a natural disaster", a Crazys Paws N Claws volunteer posted on the group's Facebook page. He told Hedges he was there on a welfare check after hearing the warehouse had been flooded.

Hedges said she felt she did what was necessary, but authorities believe she broke the law.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said, "We were able to be on the ground. we saw the soy beans that have been under water".

Tammie has been released on an unsecured bond of $10k. Instead, they are now under the control of county officials.

North Carolina environmental officials also said they're closely monitoring two sites where Florence's floodwaters have inundated coal ash sites.

In a statement, Wayne County said animal control officers had 'serious concern regarding the practice of veterinary medicine without a license and the presence of controlled substances'.

How did Hedges allegedly attempt to practice veterinary medicine?

'I had not gone out and gotten any animals, but a couple of independent rescuers had gotten some from flooded areas and brought them to me'.

Hedges says that while she fights the charges, she is working to turn the temporary shelter into a registered shelter.

"It's just a mess", he said. "They've rescued 97 dogs, 25 horses, one cow, four peacocks and 12 chickens", said Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign to support Hedges has raised more than $20,000.
