Pompeo: US Would Win Trade War with China

Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping

The meeting was meant to discuss how to de-escalate the ongoing trade war between the USA and China, which began in July. On Tuesday, China said it would impose levies on $60 billion worth of U.S. goods effective September 24.

But Trump has taken an increasingly hard line on trade around the world, with $200 billion (R2 863 300 000 000,00) in tariffs on Chinese exports set to take effect on Monday.

Though a senior White House official last week said the United States will continue to engage China for a "positive way forward", neither side has signaled willingness to compromise.

The trade tensions have also cast a pall over relations between Beijing and Washington, with the two sides already butting heads on a growing list of issues.

In a first, the Trump administration has also punished a unit of China's defense ministry for buying fighter jets and missiles from Russian Federation in defiance of sanctions on Moscow.

Vice Premier Liu He was planning to travel to Washington next week with a trade delegation, following an invitation from US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The Trump administration has argued tariffs on Chinese goods would force China to trade on more favorable terms with the United States.

Phone inquiries to the Ministry of Commerce went unanswered Saturday. The Trump administration has also called on China to allow US companies greater access to Chinese markets and to cut its USA trade surplus. China responded by adding $60 billion of US products to its import tariff list.
