Bordas: Messi's absence discredits The Best award

Fifa data shows that Harry Kane has some very interesting fans

The FIFA Best awards take place on Monday night but the two greats of the modern game will be conspicuously absent, as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are reportedly both set to miss the glitzy ceremony in London.

Ronaldo is hoping to make it a hat-trick of awards in the Best Men's Player category, having won the title in each of the two previous years, and this time round finds himself up against former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric and Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah.

Modrić is expected to win the award after playing a huge part in taking Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League and Croatia to a World Cup final.

However, Portugal's last 16 exit to Uruguay in Russian Federation and Ronaldo's failure to score in the semi-finals or final of the Champions League has opened the door for Modric.

They're back in action on Wednesday when the tackle Bologna.

But there will be a relatively little-known Australian, Riley McGree, among them as he eyes the coveted goal of the year award.

Salah secured the Premier League Golden Boot in his first season at Liverpool and also accumulated 44 goals in all competitions as the Reds finished as runners-up in Europe's premier club competition. He also played a vital role in getting Egypt to its first World Cup appearance since 1990.

Messi's strike faces competition from Gareth Bale's overhead kick in the Champions League final, while Ronaldo's acrobatic effort against Juve in the quarter-finals and Salah's goal in Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Everton in December 2017 are also among the 10 candidates.

Gary Neville and Kelly Cates will present the event live at the Royal Festival Hall from 7.30pm on Sky Sports Main Event, where the best players and coaches from the men's and women's game will be vying for a number of prizes.

The best goalkeeper prize is to be contested by France captain Hugo Lloris, Denmark's Kasper Schmeichel and Belgium's Thibaut Courtois, whose World Cup heroics earned him a move to Madrid from Chelsea.

Lyon's Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg and German midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan are joined by Brazilian five-time victor Marta of Orlando Pride in the running for the best women's player after winning the Champions League with the French giants.

Reynold Pedros of Lyon, Japan boss Asako Takakura and Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman are in the running for best women's coach.
