United Kingdom foreign minister Hunt urges EU: Get serious in Brexit talks - worldwide

British Prime Minister Theresa May makes a statement on the Brexit negotiations

"The response of the EU27 leaders was to reiterate our trust in chief negotiator Michel Barnier and to reiterate our position on the integrity of the Single Market and the Irish backstop".

His words come after a clearly livid May hit out at her counterparts for "lacking respect" when they brutally rejected her Chequers plan at this week's summit.

Mrs May said she was ready to come forward with new ideas on unblocking the disagreement over future arrangements at the Irish border. The UK expects the same.

She said she had treated the European Union "with nothing but respect" during the negotiations but that at this late stage of the process it was "not acceptable" for one sides to reject the other's proposals without a proper explanation. Scotland's top court ruled on Friday that the European Court of Justice should consider whether Britain could unilaterally change its mind on Brexit.

Mrs May's plan was rebuffed in the Austrian city last Thursday, and Mr Tusk's post only added to what several British newspapers called her "humiliation".

Canada has a much looser free trade deal with the European Union that does not remove non-tariff barriers.

That dealt a savage blow to Mrs May who is walking a political tightrope trying to keep the Remainer and Brexiteer wings of her party placated.

Mrs May said the European Union were only offering two options regarding trade: the United Kingdom staying in the European Economic Area (EEA) and a customs union, or a basic free trade agreement for Great Britain with checks at the border.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt on Saturday accused EU Council President Donald Tusk of "insulting the British people" by needling Prime Minister Theresa May in a viral social media post. It's still possible, I believe it is, all the 27 (EU member states) believe it is.

She said: "As we seek to find a way through the current impasse, I hope such good faith and respect will be reciprocated".

Following the Salzburg summit, May hinted that she would unveil a new proposal on the Northern Ireland border in the coming days.

"That is not going to happen", he told the BBC's Politics Live.

But her most pointed remarks focused on the process of the talks. "Sorry, no cherries", a reference to the EU's insistence that Ms. "We have to have a "Plan B" now - "Plan A" is out of the window". "We want you to stay", she said.

He said May was "a very stoic, resilient character".

For the British media, the message from Salzburg had been clear.

"May humiliated", The Guardian newspaper said.

He insisted he was a "true admirer" of the prime minister and that her proposals were a "step in the right direction".

"The Prime Minister's negotiating strategy is collapsing around her and that's why we're in this impasse and the country is staring down the barrel of no deal", said Sir Keir.

Arlene Foster, the head of Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party which supports May's government, welcomed May's tough stance against "disrespectful, intransigent and disgraceful" behaviour by the EU.

Media captionIs the European Union punishing the UK?

"If there are elements of our proposal they find hard, then tell us what they are and we will sit down and work through them".

With no solution on the table, the prime minister has nowhere left to turn.

Pro-EU politicians don't like the Chequers plan either, saying it will cut the U.K.'s vast services sector out of the EU's single market.
