Facebook Dating wants to be the anti-Tinder

Facebook

Tap into a profile and you can see additional photos, and answers to OkCupid-style questions like "What does your flawless day look like?" What's more, according to Facebook, this feature is especially meaningful for those on the hunt for long-term relationships as opposed to impulsive swiping.

Though Facebook Dating will roll out as part of the Facebook mobile app (there's no desktop support for it at this time), you'll be creating a private dating profile that's separate from your main Facebook page.

If the service takes off in Colombia, it's possible that the company could expand Facebook Dating globally.

To sign up, Facebook Dating users have to answer 20 compatibility questions like, "What does your flawless day look like?" and "What song always makes you sing along?"

That Facebook Dating feature that sounded like such a hard sell after the social networking giant's Cambridge Analytica data scandal is here at last. "More than 200 million people have listed themselves as single in their relationship status on Facebook", Facebook Dating's product manager Nathan Sharp said in a statement.

Company CEO Mark Zuckerberg initially reported the application at Facebook F8 keynote, popularly called F8 developer conference in San Jose, California in May 2018. Example feature sets include limiting users to expressing interest in a maximum of 100 people per day, highlighting more personal facts about you via your profile, and defaulting to show you friends-of-friends as well as strangers, unless of course you choose to make it otherwise. There's no swiping, for one thing. Unlike Tinder or Bumble, you do not have to mutually match with anyone to send them a message - the only prerequisite is that the person is in your available pool of daters. Speaking of matches, there are no "matches" in the way that there are on other dating apps. However, users will be able to match with people who are attending the same events, or those in the same Facebook groups. Sharp notes that members of groups must opt in separately to ensure privacy. Other than that, you can message pretty much anyone.

If and when Facebook Dating comes to your country, you won't have to worry about unexpectedly getting barraged with messages from random people looking to date, as Facebook Dating is entirely opt-in. The feature is limited to text and emoji only - you can't exchange photos, links, or other media.
