Efforts on to rescue injured Navy officer stranded in ocean storm
Mumbai: India, Australia and other worldwide agencies have launched a massive effort to rescue a seriously injured Indian Navy commander participating in the Golden Global Race (GGR) 2018, an official said here on Saturday.
According to a report issued from the Les Sables d'Olonne, France Friday night, the 70 knot winds and 14 metre high seas have left the yachts of Indian Navy's Tomy and Ireland's Gregor McGuckin dismasted, and have twice knocked down the yacht of second-placed Dutchman Mark Slats. He was on the third position in the race, The Indian Express reported.
The messages were picked up by Indian authorities and Australian Rescue Coordination Centre, Canberra, which is now coordinating a rescue mission jointly with several agencies including the Australian Defence Department and the Indian Navy, a defence spokesperson said here.
Tomy is sailing on an indigenously built sailing vessel called Thuriya.
An Indian Navy officer who has circumnavigated the world has been injured after his yacht was hit by a vicious storm in the ongoing Golden Globe circumnavigation race in the South Indian Ocean, race organisers said late on Friday.

'We are very grateful to all these global organisations for mobilising their resources so quickly and for the lead role taken by MRCC in Canberra'.
'The only link is the tracking signal we are receiving from the yacht, but the batteries have a limited life, ' Mr McIntyre said. "He was in the 3rd position out of 11 worldwide participants in the GGR competition having sailed over 10,500 nautical miles in 84 days since the race started on July 1", the spokesperson said.
The 39-year-old Indian Golden Globe Race skipper Tomy, who is serving as Indian Naval Officer, is in the south Indian Ocean, approximately 1900 nautical miles from Perth, Australia. "Indian Navy stealth frigate INS Satpura, mission deployed in Southern Indian Ocean diverted for the rescue mission".
