Djokovic hits Federer, pair lose in doubles at Laver Cup

Federer, Zverev put Europe on top at Laver Cup

Former world number ones Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic lost in the Laver Cup doubles but Team Europe lead Team World 3-1 after day one of the event.

The Serbian saw a forehand hit Federer, who was standing at the net, in the back during their clash against Kevin Anderson and Jack Sock.

The foursome went toe-to-toe in the early stages of the last set, but having seen their team-mates lose in two deciders earlier in the day, Sock and Anderson made sure not to waste their opportunity when Federer doubled-faulted at 4-4.

Edmund overcame Sock 6-4 5-7 (10-6) despite struggling with his serve at times and coughing up four double faults, before Goffin staved off a late rally on his way to a 6-4 4-6 (11-9) triumph over Argentine Diego Schwartzman.

The format calls for shorter matches.

An impressive return victor from Sock sealed the set 10-6, giving captain John McEnroe some relief before day two where two points will be up for grabs.

Dimitrov used his precision backhand to keep Tiafoe off balance as he closed out the match with his 10th and final ace.

The doubles game followed three singles matches earlier in the day - Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov putting the first point on the board for Europe after beating Frances Tiafoe 6-1 6-4. "I think today that's what I did".

Bjorn Borg's Team Europe will be aiming to defend their crown against Team World which will be captained by the legendary John McEnroe.

Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Dimitrov, David Goffin and Edmund make up Team Europe.

After the game, the duo sat on the bench during the break and had a light time discussing the moment and Federer was quick to say that this is why they don't play doubles as both laughed it off.

Sock, Nick Kyrgios, John Isner, Tiafoe, Anderson and Schwartzman are representing Team World.
